Communication in China

Working in communications in and from China is not as straightforward as in other parts of the world. The picture on the left shows the variety of tools required to keep you informed about the GrandSlam here in Wuhan. Internet access is generally good, with plenty of bandwidth to upload. The cable arrangements are inspired by local dishes ... Even if all the hardware is in place, it takes an extra effort to work around certain restrictions that the Chinese government imposes on access to the social media. The tools for that cannot be shown as their possession is considered illegal here.

Never mind the computers, the sheet of paper is of crucial importance. It spells out codes that are being used to interact with the local workforce. Our director and floor manager informs the staff in charge of lighting during the televised final of the GrandSlam by holding up fingers. One finger up: four spots follow the couple around the floor during the solo ... Two fingers up: put the spot on the couple in the kiss & cry area ... You get the idea!
